Client: Gunnison Valley Health

Format: Community health campaign and news feature

Published: August 2025

This campaign supported community access to affordable preventive lab testing and helped reduce barriers to care in the Gunnison Valley. I served as the event manager and communications lead for Gunnison Valley Health’s low-cost blood testing events and authored the official coverage that documented record turnout and community impact.

Objective

  • Increase access to preventive blood testing for community members

  • Expand health equity by reducing cost barriers to essential screenings

  • Mobilize and manage volunteers to support patient flow and on-site operations

  • Strengthen partnerships with local health and community partners

Role and Responsibilities

I led the project from planning through execution, including:

  • Serving as lead event planner and on-site coordinator

  • Recruiting, organizing and managing a large team of volunteers

  • Coordinating logistics for three testing days

  • Overseeing volunteer support needs including food

  • Working with partners and staff to ensure smooth operations and jumping into various roles as needed to allow volunteers and staff breaks

  • Writing and editing the official news feature for publication

Scale and Participation

  • The low-cost blood testing events served 1,751 community members across the Gunnison Valley this year, a record turnout for the Gunnison event post covid

  • The program included a robust volunteer team made up of Gunnison Valley Health medical professionals, organizational staff, community volunteers from Health and Human Services, and a dedicated team from It Starts With Me who supported patient intake, testing stations and logistics.

Health Equity and Impact

The events promoted health equity by providing affordable preventive care to individuals who might otherwise delay or skip essential blood testing due to cost, time or cultural barriers. Through strategic planning and volunteer support, the outreach event expanded access to preventive services and helped community members take charge of their health.

Distribution

The feature was published on the Gunnison Valley Health website and shared through organizational newsletters and social media channels to maximize community awareness and engagement.

Why This Matters

This project reflects my ability to manage high-impact, community-facing health initiatives while balancing logistics, communications and volunteer coordination. It demonstrates strategic leadership, operational execution and a commitment to increasing health equity in underserved communities.
